The self-sharpening effect
Sharpening of self-sharpening rails occurs automatically as the rail steel wears away on either side of the carbides. This simple principle is the same as sharpening a lead pencil. The specialized steel that coats the carbides is less hard than the carbides. The steel first wears a little faster in frozen gravel and/or on icy trails and that's when the carbides come out of the runner by themselves. The carbides in turn sharpen on contact with the asphalt. This produces balanced sharpening throughout the wear of the smooth and carbides. Wear of the rail is also slowed down by a specific heat treatment to be more resistant to wear in general. Therefore, the smooth always maintains a cut in the condition of a new one during the complete wear of the carbides. They will give you a consistent cut from the beginning to the end of their life.
